Much Ado About Makeup

On top of all of the challenges thrown upon women, one of the most simple and trivial of them is makeup. Some think that everyone should wear it, some think that no one should wear it. Well, I’m here to tell you that whether or not you choose to wear makeup is your choice and yours alone, and here’s why:

Merriam-Webster's dictionary defines makeup as, “cosmetics (such as lipstick, mascara, and eye shadow) used to color and beautify the face”. People who wear makeup use it to accentuate their features and to cover up insecurities, so why do people care what others do? Some say that women should wear makeup and some say that they shouldn’t, but riddle me this, why on earth does it matter? Makeup should be something that people choose to wear, not something that is forced upon them. It’s their right to choose to wear it or not depending on how it makes them feel, not how it makes other people feel. So leave them alone.

Personally, I don’t know a thing about putting on makeup. I never have. I mean I understand the basics of how to apply lip gloss, but ask me about eyeshadow or foundation and I will not have a way to answer you. However, I do know people of every gender that can absolutely rock that eyeshadow and foundation. They destroy the makeup game with how amazing they look. It makes them feel more confident. I, on the other hand, feel confident without makeup. This is why we shouldn't force people to wear or not wear makeup because it's different for everyone and everyone should feel confident!

But this also does not mean that you should criticize someone on the way they choose to wear their makeup. For example, one day I was scrolling through TikTok and I came across a girl who was talking about her favorite movie. She seemed so happy and confident in herself and the way she looked, but the comment section was entirely negative. People were telling her to fix her face, offering to show her the proper way to do her eyebrows, and telling her not to wear makeup at all. This nice girl just wanted to make a video on her favorite movie and instead, she got criticized for something as trivial as how she did her eyebrows. Again I say that if someone is confident in something, do not tear them down. This girl was confident in herself, and instead of sharing in her confidence, people chose to shut her down. This can cause a lot of damage to a person and could make them lose confidence in themselves and society, which is not something one should have to experience. So next time you feel like making a negative comment on someone’s makeup or lack thereof, leave it alone, yeah? It’s their thing, not yours, so just hold that comment and scroll past that video.

To wear makeup, or not to wear makeup, that is the question! And the answer is that it absolutely does not matter. Makeup is something that people should choose to wear, not something that they should be forced to wear, and the same goes for those that choose not to wear it. In the end, makeup is a question of confidence. Whether you are more confident with makeup or without it is a question you’ll just have to answer for yourself.
