Biden has won the Election, but what does that mean for us?

A long-awaited day for many Americans, former Vice President Joe Biden has turned Pennsylvania and won enough electoral votes to secure a win in the 2020 Presidential Election. In more ways than one, this election has made history: Over 161 Million Americans voted this year, shattering all previous voting number records, and Joe Biden received 74 million of those votes, awarding him the honor of the most votes for any presidential candidate in history. Biden’s running mate, Kamala Harris, also made history as not only the first woman to be elected Vice President, but also the first ever person of color, as Harris is of both Indian American and Jamaican American descent.

While today is considered a victory for both democracy and diversity, we must remember that the fight for racial, social, and gender equality is far from over. Even though both Biden and Harris have promised to govern this country in the name of ALL people, many past presidents have failed to fall through with their promises, so we must continue to push and hold our new administration accountable for injustices, just as we have done with our current president. Though it is ultimately up to Biden and Harris how our country is governed, it is up to the American people to fight and represent true “liberty and justice for all”. So today, while we rejoice in the hope of a better future for America, let us also not forget why it is we are rejoicing. We must continue in our fight against the racism, injustice, and corruption we have seen and hoped to end in these last 4 years and use our experiences to shape a new and better future for America.
